Search

To search for multiple words, separate them with spaces.

Search Phrases

To search for an exact phrase, surround it with double-quotation marks. A string of capitalized words is assumed to be a name. Separate a series of names with commas. Commas aren't needed when the phrases are surrounded by quotation marks.

The following example searches for a document that contains the phrases "Sustainable use" and "Wise use":

"Sustainable use" "Wise use"

Search query syntax

The query syntax is very similar to the syntax that users expect to use on the web. Queries are interpreted according to the following rules:

  • Individual search terms are separated by space, tab, or comma; for example:

    Inland waters

  • Search phrases are entered within double-quotation marks; for example:

    "Convention on Wetlands" Ramsar

  • Exclude terms with the minus ( - ), or the NOT operator; for example:

    inland waters -marine

    inland waters NOT marine

  • Require a compulsory term with the plus sign (+); in this example, the term "inland waters" must be included:

    wetlands +"inland waters"

  • Require compulsory terms with AND; in this example, the terms wetlands and "inland waters" must be included:

    wetlands and "inland waters"

Using keywords

We have selected a list of keywords that have alternate terms. Once you have chosen a keyword from the drop down box, another box will appear with terms listed. You can select multiple terms by clicking on one term, hold the Ctrl key and click on another term. Click search to execute the query.

Score

The item's returned when entering text in the search box will have a score associated with it. This score is calculated by the number of occurrences the phrase appears within the item. When no phrase is entered the results are ordered by time entered into the search index.
