With this convention, composed by 28 articles, the Member States of the African Union set the common objectives of the promotion and development in Africa of mechanisms required to prevent, detect, punish and eradicate corruption and related offences in the public and private sectors, regulate cooperation among the State Parties to ensure the effectiveness of relevant measures and actions, coordinate and harmonize the policies and legislation between State Parties, promote socio-economic development by removing obstacles to the enjoyment of economic, social, cultural and civil and political rights, establish the necessary conditions to foster transparency and accountability in the management of public affairs. To reach these objectives legislative and other measures are adopted by the Member States aimed at establishing some corrupted behaviour as criminal offences: laundering, illicit enrichment, funding of political parties, The text sets up the principles that the State Parties undertake to abide and describes the acts and offences to which the convention is applicable. The text further establishes the jurisdiction of each State Party over acts of corruption and related offences and describes the measures the Members States can count on to fight corruption such as extradition, confiscation, seizeres, international cooperation etc.
