This Law consisting of 34 articles aims at protecting the environment implementing an integrated system to organize waste management and unify the tools for a correct elimination through the use of the best available practices and techniques. The Law covers all phases related to the waste, from production to sorting, from transport to storage, from recycling to treatment and disposal, with the exclusion of radioactive waste.
The competent local authority in each Emirate is responsible for the waste management in its area regarding services, planning, necessary measures related to waste management, and improvement of good environmental practices. The Ministry may (i) prohibit the importation of disposable, or short-term use, or harmful to the environment products; (ii) prohibit the importation of products difficult to dispose; (iii) prevent industries from using or importing difficult to be disposed products; (iv) impose to use some waste suitable for recycling or to treat those that need a special separate treatment; (v) encourage the installation of recycling facilities.
The Law deals also with (i) municipal solid waste; (ii) sewage waste; (iii) construction and demolition waste; (iv) industrial waste; (v) agricultural waste; (vi) marine waste; and (vii) waste oil. The responsible body at the Ministry shall create a national database regarding the waste so that the competent local authority shall provide all data relating to the management of waste on a regular basis.
