This National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) provides a road map for the protection of biodiversity in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) against threats such as environmental conversion and degradation, over-exploitation of resources, waste management and pollution, invasive and alien species, climate change and infrastructure development. The Strategy's vision is that the FSM will have more extensive, diverse, and higher quality of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems, which meet human needs and aspirations fairly, preserve and utilize traditional knowledge and practices, and fulfil the ecosystem functions necessary for all life on earth. This NBSAP has been developed through a consultative process involving members of various governmental agencies at both state and municipal levels, UNDP, non- governmental organizations (NGOs), community-based organizations, scientists and educators. The Strategy is focused on the themes of ecosystem management, species management, genetic resource use, agrobiodiversity, ecological sustainable industry development, biosecurity, waste management, human resources and institutional development, resource owners, mainstreaming biodiversity and financial resources.
The Strategy guiding principles are sovereign rights and community-based approach, traditional heritage and ecological integrity. The text provides instructions on the implementation, monitoring and reporting of the Strategy. The Text consists of four sections as follow: Introduction (1); Biodiversity in FSM (2); Background to the Revised National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (3); The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (4). One Appendix is attached to the text that includes annual quick assessment template describing the goals processing and actions.
