This Act prescribes conditions for operating abattoirs in Vanuatu, requires approval of abattoirs and registration and licensing of meat export processing establishments, prescribes standards for the construction of meat processing establishments, regulates methods of slaughtering of animals and treatment of animals, and regulates inspection and enforcement of provisions of this Act. An abattoir means any place used for the slaughter of animals for human consumption. The Minister may on the recommendation of the director of the department of agriculture and livestock appoint any person to be a meat inspector. No application for a certificate for an abattoir shall be approved by the Minister unless and until the Minister is satisfied that the said abattoir complies with the requirements set out in sections 9 to 19 of this Act. Sections 22 and 23 prescribe rules for the treatment of animals before slaughter.
