This Act aims to regulate the activity of organic farming in Saudi Arabia and protect it from any wrong practice. The Act consists of 18 articles.
The Saudi Organic Law was essentially drafted to provide a legal basis for sanctions and penalties in the case of irregularities and violations of the requirements laid down in the National Regulation & Standards for Organic Agriculture. The Act defines responsibilities of the Ministry of Agriculture, mainly regarding supervision and certification of organic farming activities (arts. 4 and 5). The Act further provides for competences of the Ministry, in particular: to prepare and adopt standards for the organic farming activity; to adopt procedures for examination and analysis of organic substances used in organic farming; to create lists of substances authorized for use; to establish labelling requirements and data on the organic substances card and to establish requirements for import and export of organic substances (art.6).
The second part of the Act (arts.11-16) focuses on prohibitions and sanctions for violations of the provisions of this Act.
