Definition(s)
Ecologically fragile and vulnerable island states that are exposed to adverse natural phenomena and environmental disasters, such as hurricanes, typhoons and floods, whose intensity and severity are believed to have increased recently due to climate change. Global warming and the rising sea level imply that some low-lying island States face existential threats. (Source: UN-DESA, ST/ESA/2010/CDP/10)
