يشير مصطلح الكتلة الحيوية على وجه الدقة إلى إجمالي وزن جميع الأحياء الموجودة في نظام إيكولوجي معين. إلا أنه أصبح يستخدم كذلك للإشارة إلى كمية المادة النباتية والمحصولية التي يمكن إنتاجها في نظام إيكولوجي معين لصنع الوقود الحيوي وغيره من المواد الخام المستخدمة في الصناعة مثلا.
