الصيد في البحر بكميات لا يجاريها النمو الطبيعي لأعداد الكائنات. ويرجع الإفراط في الصيد إلى عدد من الأسباب، أقساها القدرة المفرطة المزمنة لأساطيل الصيد الحديثة على صيد الأسماك بكميات هائلة بالفعل تفوق معدلات إحلالها من جديد.
