قدرة المادة على البقاء ثابتة كيميائياً. وهذا هو عامل هام في تقدير الآثار البيئية للمواد التي يجري تصريفها في البيئة. وتتميز بعض المواد السامة (مثل مركبات السيانيد) بمقاومة منخفضة للتحلل، في حين تتميز مواد أخرى ذات سمية فورية أقل (مثل العديد من المركبات الكلورية العضوية) بمقاومة عالية للتحلل ويمكن بالتالي أن تسبب المزيد من الآثار الخطيرة.
