By way of implementation of Directive 1999/22/EC, this Legislative Decree makes provision on zoos, as defined by article 2, with a view to protecting wild fauna and conserving biological diversity. Zoos shall be granted the licence required as long as they fulfill the conditions prescribed by article 3, which include participation in research from which conservation benefits accrue to the species and promotion of public education and awareness in relation to the conservation of biodiversity. Article 8 lays down penalties.
