These basic Food Regulations consist of 10 Parts and 27 Schedules. They apply to any food in Malaysia prepared, produced or packaged for export.
The 10 Parts include: Preliminary (I); Warranty (II); Procedure for taking samples (III); Labelling (IV); Food Additive and nutrient supplement (V); Packages for food (VI); Incidental constituent (VII); Standards and particular labelling requirements (VIII); Use of water, ice and steam (IX) and Miscellaneous (X).
Part VIII provides detailed provisions regarding standard requirements for a variety of food including cereal products, milk, meat, fish, egg, vegetables, fruit, tea, salt and spices, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and special purpose food. Regulation 20 lists the maximum permitted preservative that may be added to specified food. The Regulation provides a comprehensive list of prohibited flavouring substances that are injurious or likely to be injurious to health. There are provisions on food requiring date marking and certain foods including infant formula, tea and flavouring substances require a written warranty.

The following Regulations are revoked to the following extent: (a) Part I to Part V and Part VII of the Sale of Food and Drugs Regulations 1952; (b) Part I to Part IV of the Public Health (Food and Drugs) Regulations 1960; and (c) Part I to Part IV of the Public Health (Food and Drugs) Regulations 1962.Incorporating latest amendment - P.U.
