The Maldives’ Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) sets out an ambitious plan through 2035, combining mitigation and adaptation strategies to address climate vulnerability. While its emissions reduction targets remain conditional on international support, the NDC underscores the country’s commitment to a low-carbon development pathway and resilience building. As a highly vulnerable small island developing state, the Maldives emphasizes both mitigation and adaptation. The plan includes a conditional target to cut 1.52 million tonnes of CO₂ by 2035, subject to international support in terms of finance, technology, and capacity-building. On the adaptation front, the NDC gives strong attention to agriculture, food security, and water sectors that are particularly exposed to climate impacts. The NDC also addresses fishery and disaster risk reduction through early warning systems. To build resilience, the NDC calls for stronger meteorological networks and improved early warning mechanisms, aiming to provide real‑time climate data and impact-based forecasts to vulnerable communities. Gender and social inclusion are cross-cutting themes throughout, with adaptation efforts designed to especially support women, youth, and marginalized island communities, ensuring that climate actions benefit the most vulnerable.
