Abstract:

The case concerned the renewal of the permit for Arlanda Airport. The judgment contained the new conditions for the operations at the airport and was based on chapters 9 and 11 of the Environmental Code.

There were several important changes compared to the previous permit. The new permit did not contain an emission ceiling for carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Instead the company operating the airport has to work with the existing action plan for a reduction of emissions and get a new version approved by the regulatory authority.

The new permit moreover permits straight-in approaches as long as they do not fly over the nearby town. Measures were also taken to reduce noise from the airport operations. A new evaluation should be made by the company operating the airport on how to limit noise. This evaluation shall then be given to the Land and Environment Court. Anti-noise protection should also be constructed on several nearby properties, especially with regards to private homes and schools.
