The Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions launched the "Plastic Waste in Remote and Mountainous Areas" project in 2019 to address the urgent issue of plastic pollution growth in fragile ecosystems in the remote and mountainous areas. The project has advanced through data collection, a baseline report, and implementation of pilot activities across nine countries with plans to expand to more countries in 2025.
