The present Directive has been enacted in order to amend and supplement particular provisions laid down in Directive 91/68/EEC as regards those conditions under which ovine and caprine animals for slaughter or for breeding and fattening may be subject of trade within the Community.

Member States are required to bring into force the laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary to comply with this Directive before 1 July 2004.
