This Regulation establishes classification criteria for water quality purposes and also classifies the quality of surface and groundwater, and further provides for consequential watercourse categorization.
The classification and categorization are done with the aim of harmonization and comparability of grades of anthropogenic pollutant impacts on the ecological function of water, determining the water quality for existing and planned uses, establishment of quality goals for each district or part of the river basin and especially for the control of the success of all undertaken mere protection aimed at preventing the deterioration of the state and progressive improvement and restoration of all surface waters including artificial and heavily modified watercourse.
