This Decree of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, which is composed of eight articles and two Annexes, establishes ecologically important areas and conservation policies to maintain or achieve favorable conservation status of habitat types and species of wild flora and fauna species and their habitats in these areas. For the purposes of these provisions ecologically important area is the area of habitat type or part of larger ecosystem unit which significantly contributes to the conservation of biodiversity. Ecologically important areas are designed to include in particular: (1) habitats of wild flora and fauna species and habitat types where maintenance is performed on the basis of ratified international treaties and their conservation in the interest of the European Union; (2) habitat types that are in the territory representing a particular biogeographical region; (3) habitats of plant and animal species in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia with the risk of degradation of habitat qualities. Ecologically important areas are listed in Annex 1.
