حمولة السفن العابرة للمحيطات من المياه في قاع السفينة حيث تُستخدم الكتلة الإضافية للإبقاء على السفينة مستقرةً وهي تشق طريقها إلى ميناء المقصد. وتستخدم الصابورة عندما تكون حمولة السفينة غير كاملة، وبعد ذلك تُضخ المياه إلى البحر مرة أخرى عندما تحميل بضائع جديدة على السفينة. ويمكن أن يؤدي ذلك إلى حدوث الكثير من المشاكل إذا كانت مياه الصابورة المصرَّفة محتويةً على ملوثات أو كائنات حية قد تكون لها آثار سلبية على الحياة البحرية المحلية في ميناء المقصد.
