منتج ثانوي يتكون في أثناء إعداد مبيد الأعشاب (2, 4, 5-T)، وأحيانا ينتج عن حرق المركبات العضوية المكلورة. كما قد يظهر بصورة طبيعية ويتوزيع على نطاق واسع في البيئة، عدا في نطاقات محلية بتركيزات منخفضة لأقصى حد. وقد أطلقت كميات كبيرة منه في حادث سيفيسفو عام 1976.
