امتداد جغرافي معين من سطح الأرض يشتمل على جميع خصائصا بما في ذلك جيولوجيتها وترسيباتها السطحية وتضاريسها ونظمها الهيدرولوجية وتربتها والحياة النباتية والحيوانية فيها، إلى جانب ناتج النشاط البشري الحاضر والماضي، بقدر ما تؤثر هذه الخصائص تأثيرا كبيرا على استخدام الأرض في الحاضر والمستقبل. جعل الأرض قابلة لمزيد من الاستخدام المكثف بتغيير طبيعتها العامة، كتجفيف المناطق شديدة الرطوبة، وري الأراضي القاحلة أو شبة القاحلة أو استرجاع الأراضي المغمورة من البحار والبحيرات والأنهار.
