يُعرِّف التصديق الفعل الدولي الذي تُبيِّن الدولة بموجبه موافقتها على الالتزام بمعاهدة إذا كانت الأطراف تعتزم إبداء موافقتها عن طريق ذلك الفعل. وفي حالة المعاهدات الثنائية، يُنجز التصديق عادة بتبادل الصكوك اللازمة، بينما يكون الإجراء المعتاد في حالة المعاهدات المتعددة الأطراف هو أن يجمع الوديع تصديقات جميع الدول، مع مواصلة إحاطة جميع الأطراف علماً بحالة التصديق. ويمنح نظام التصديق الدول الإطار الزمني اللازم للحصول على الموافقة اللازمة على المعاهدة على الصعيد المحلي ولسن التشريعات اللازمة لإنفاذ تلك المعاهدة محلياً.
