Article 11 of the Minamata Convention requires parties to manage mercury waste in an environmentally sound manner. Mercury waste is defined as waste consisting of , containing or contaminated with mercury above the thresholds established by the Conference of the Parties (COP). Definition of some categories of mercury waste has been established at the past meetings of COP, and a group of technical experts met in February 2023 to establish the last remaining piece – thresholds for waste contaminated with mercury. The co-chairs of the expert group and the Secretariat will present the report of the expert group proposing the threshold, to be considered at COP-5.
