التذبذبات التي تطرأ على المدى الطويل على درجة الحرارة ومعدلات الهطول وحركة الرياح وكافة الجوانب الأخرى في مناخ الأرض. ومن العوامل التي تؤثر على التغير المناخي العمليات الخارجية مثل تفاوت قوة الإشعاع الشمسي وتفاوت معايير حركة الأرض في مدارها (الانحراف المداري وترنح الاعتدالين وزاوية الميل) وتحركات غلاف الأرض الصخري والنشاط البركاني. كما أن التفاوتات الداخلية في النظام المناخي، كتغير وفرة غازات الاحتباس الحراري، تؤدي أيضا إلى إحداث تذبذبات بقدر وتفاوت كافيين لتفسير التغير المناخي الملحوظ عبر عمليات التغذية الراجعة التي تربط بين مكونات النظام المناخي.
