Nine years ago, Costa Rica started a commitment, within the Stockholm Convention framework, to make a continuous effort aimed at reducing or eliminating the so called persistent organic pollutants (POPs). These components represent a threat to health and the environment due to their persistence in the environment, easy transportation, bioaccumulation and toxicity. In 2009, the first National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the Stockholm Convention considered both the elimination of 12 pesticides used in agriculture such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are used in the electric industry
