The present Directive lays down the legislative framework concerning matters related to waste management, waste disposal and waste recovery. The essential objective of these provisions is the protection of human health and the environment against harmful effects caused by the collection, transport, treatment, storage and tipping of waste. For the purposes of this Directive, “waste” shall mean any substance or object pertaining to one of the categories listed in Annex I which the holder discards, intends or is required to discard. Radioactive waste and waste waters, among others, are excluded from the scope.
